Which platforms play together

The game sorts every player and server into one of 3 platform groups. With crossplay on, all groups meet on the same server; with it off, the server browser only shows servers of your own group.

The crossplay setting exists on Windows, Linux, macOS, Xbox Series S, Xbox Series X, PlayStation 5. Default slots are what the host menu starts with on that device.

Dedicated server settings

A PC player can join any server. For a server to be a crossplay server, its serverconfig.xml needs these values. When the server starts, it checks them, and if the slot count or the sanction setting is off it logs a warning and runs the session without crossplay.

ServerAllowCrossplaytruefalseTurns crossplay on for the server.
ServerMaxPlayerCount8 or less8Player slots. Above 8, crossplay is switched off at start.
IgnoreEOSSanctionsfalsefalseIgnoring the online-services sanctions (bans on the player's account) also switches crossplay off.
EACEnabledtruetrueEasyAntiCheat. The console server browser only lists servers that run it.

The console server browser also hides servers that ignore sanctions and servers that need mods, so keep a crossplay server free of mods. Reserved slots (ServerReservedSlots) are part of the slot count; admin slots (ServerAdminSlots) let admins in on top of it.

Hosting from the game

When you host a game from the menu, crossplay is one of the multiplayer settings and is on by default. It can only be switched on when your own account is allowed to crossplay. The host's device sets the default player slots: PC 8, PlayStation 5 4, Xbox Series X 4, Xbox Series S 2.

The player side

  • Crossplay in Multiplayer (game settings): "Allows connection to game sessions with Crossplay enabled. Players from other platforms may join these sessions." With it off you do not see crossplay servers at all, and the server browser's crossplay filter is greyed out.
  • Your platform account has its own crossplay permission (console privacy and parental settings). When it says no, the game refuses crossplay sessions with a message.
  • The game can switch crossplay off for a whole platform for a while ("Crossplay is temporarily disabled on this platform").

Good to know

General knowledge, not from the game files.

  • Crossplay is shared multiplayer, not shared saves: your characters and single-player worlds stay on the device they were made on.
  • The old console edition on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One is a different game and does not take part.

Questions

Is 7 Days to Die crossplay?

Yes. In 3.3 players on PC, Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5 can join the same game, on a dedicated server or one a player hosts, when the game has crossplay switched on.

How many players can a crossplay server have?

At most 8. A dedicated server with ServerAllowCrossplay set and more than 8 slots turns crossplay off for the session when it starts.

Can console players join a modded server?

No. Consoles hide servers that need mods, so a modded server is for PC players only.

Why can I not see crossplay servers?

Check the "Crossplay in Multiplayer" option in the game's settings: with it off you only see servers of your own platform. Your platform account's own crossplay permission can block it as well.
